Who We Are
MIRAS Research is an independent historical and archival research service helping individuals, families, professionals and organizations investigate the records behind their history. Our work connects a clearly defined research question with relevant sources, documented findings and an explanation of what the evidence can—and cannot—establish.
Our Purpose
A family name, an old title deed or a place of origin can hold the beginning of a larger story. Our purpose is to make historical evidence understandable and useful: identifying possible sources, examining records in context and presenting findings with clear references. We approach heritage as a subject for careful investigation, with respect for the people and communities represented in the documents.
What We Research
Our services cover Ottoman archive research, genealogy and family history, population registers, historical property and land records, court and judicial records, waqf records, migration history, military records and historical documents. Document search, Ottoman Turkish transcription and translation, and research reports can be included within an agreed assignment. Each service is scoped according to the question, period, sources and access.
Historical Coverage, Defined for Each Project
Research may concern Türkiye and former Ottoman territories across the Balkans, Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa. A place in present-day Greece, Cyprus or another country may have historical records held across several institutions. We assess the relevant jurisdiction, languages and surviving sources before confirming coverage. A geographic connection does not mean that every local archive or period can be searched.
Who We Help
We support families exploring ancestry, individuals investigating places of origin, historians developing a source-based study, and professionals seeking historical documentation. Organizations may commission research into an institution, waqf, locality or historical question. If a project involves present-day citizenship, inheritance or ownership, the research findings require a separate legal assessment by qualified advisers and competent authorities.
Our Research Standards
We agree the scope before work begins, record archival identifiers and distinguish a source’s wording from our interpretation. Where possible, we compare names, dates, places and relationships across records. Confirmed findings, potential matches and unresolved questions are presented separately. Sensitive family and identity information should be shared through an agreed secure method; send only what is needed for the research question.
Independent Research and Institutional Rules
MIRAS is not a government archive or governmental authority and does not imply an official affiliation with the institutions whose collections may be consulted. Access, reproduction, fees and certification remain subject to each holding institution’s rules. Official certified copies can only be issued by the competent institution where that service is available.
What You Can Expect
A clearly scoped assignment, a reasoned research strategy and documented findings. Depending on the agreement and results, deliverables may include archival references, permitted copies, summaries, transcription, translation, historical context and a structured report. Historical records may be missing, restricted or incomplete; we do not guarantee discovery or a legal outcome. Negative searches and evidential gaps are explained rather than concealed.
